Simmons mailbag had good "perspective" on it as well, w/ the Chiefs
the last playoff game they won was iced on a handoff from Joe Montana, to Marcus Allen, while playing against the Oilers at the Astrodome (for those that didn't read this week's mailbag)
AYFKM? Yes, I keep harping on the SB, NFC Championship game, etc. for no reason

Do you think Whisenhunt shouldn't have been fired?

Sorry, let me elaborate.
Example 1 that I hate. when a superstar athlete misbehaves and people say "If I did that at my job, I'd be fired." Yes, that is likely true, because there are millions of people on this planet who can do your job and do it well. how many people can play sports at the level of the pro athlete. Not nearly as many. Hence the multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts.
Example 2 that I hate. when people say athletes are spoiled and they get paid to play a game that you would play for free. Yes, this is true. They do get paid a lot, and you would probably play for free. But sports arenas would not be sold out across the country with people watching Average Joe playing. we pay outrageous ticket prices, parking, and concessions to see the best of the best.
Example 3 is the one you tried to use, Kod. Sports are indeeed businesses. businesses that are highly results based. The average tenure of an NFL coach if far shorted than the 8 years Lovie Smith got. The Bears have clearly plateaued under his leadership, and the owners feel they need a change to get to the next level. Treading water with slightly above average results may cut it in most walks of life, but not in sports.

Sucks the Hawks & Skins gotta play each other in the 1st round.
It would have been awesome if Seattle/Washington was later.

"ponder in Lambeau next week is hilarity"
GB has lost 4 of their last 6 home playoff games; I'd rather be in GB than on the road against any of the other NFC playoff teams, other than maybe Frisco
also, AP ran for 225 yards in lambeau, with Ponder as his QB earlier this year
all about Peterson
The team I fear the most is Seattle, but only because the Vikes would have to play them on the road
Washington second most, because they whooped up on us pretty good earlier this year
also, AP ran for 225 yards in lambeau, with Ponder as his QB earlier this year
Wasn't GB missing Matthews & maybe a couple other people on D?
yes
I don't have a ton of respect for Atlanta or Frisco
but they were there yesterday
i'm most worried about the Giants, they have a tough pass rush, and potent offense
"Wasn't GB missing Matthews"
yep, they were

True. Minni also needed that game a whole lot more than GB did
Nothing against you, kod, but I think Pack are gonna roll
i think pack kind of played it close to vest as well because they knew they might see vikes next week.
although, they did have something to play for, a first round bye
I know the Pack D sucks, but I also think they can put up 50 points if they want

#1 seed gets the home road to the SB this year
Adrian Peterson's nickname is still not AP.
"Nothing against you, kod, but I think Pack are gonna roll"
none taken, but I think you're wrong; over 30+ years, I've learned that when it comes to GB/Minni, expect the unexpected
I think it's going to end up going down to the wire; gonna be Guilford v. Freeman
one funny stat, overall playoff record between the teams? 1-0 Vikes (2005 in GB), funny they haven't played more playoff games
"#1 seed gets the home road to the SB this year"
Really? Weird. I always thought the 2nd best record got all the home games.

"if seattle stops the run, AHIK, can RGIII throw the Skins past them? or anyone for that matter"
probably not, RGIII ain't right, that knee
throws in the first half looked eerily mcnabb like, was terryfying
true that
not having to play in seattle is suite though
"They started out 0-4."
I don't know what planet you're living on, must be a Fringe like Universe
in mine, they started 4-0
atich, and how many teams have not been in the playoffs at all since 2005, how many have been to a championship game, a superbowl?
I'd be willing to bet that all or almost all of those teams that haven't been in the playoffs since 2005 have new coaches
I don't know what planet you're living on, must be a Fringe like Universe
in mine, they started 4-0
yeah I don't know why I put 0-4. Must be lysdexic today
"I'd be willing to bet that all or almost all of those teams that haven't been in the playoffs since 2005 have new coaches"
in part why many haven't been in the playoffs since 2005
So is your basis on why Lovie shouldn't be fired strictly because they were 10-6 this season?
there is a collective amnesia with football fans, sports media, team personnel that staggers me
I was pissed when they fired Denny Green, I was pissed when the U fired Mason
and history proved me right; I hope it proves the Bears wrong here as well, for several reasons
"So is your basis on why Lovie shouldn't be fired strictly because they were 10-6 this season?"
AYFKM? Yes, I keep harping on the SB, NFC Championship game, etc. for no reason
Spiff trying the xnij already!!
I do think there needs to be very exceptional circumstances to fire an NFL coach after a 10-6 year though
like a horrible body of work over multiple years, paired with an epic collapse of a very good team
and even then I wouldn't pull the trigger if it was my say
but I'd get it if someone else did
"atich, and how many teams have not been in the playoffs at all since 2005, how many have been to a championship game, a superbowl?"
Those coaches get FIRED.
Shit, I've heard grumblings from Steelers fans that Mike Fucking Tomlin is on the hotseat.
"paired with an epic collapse of a very good team"
like starting 7-1 and then missing the playoffs?
I bet Kod totally doesn't think Rex Ryan should be fired.
AYFKM? Yes, I keep harping on the SB, NFC Championship game, etc. for no reason
The Cardinals were in the Super Bowl 4 years ago. They started this season 4-0 and sucked the last 3 months. The Cards have missed the playoffs 3 of the last 5 years.
The Bears were in the Super Bowl 6 years ago. They started this season 7-1 and sucked the last 2 months. The Bears have missed the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years. And the Bears have a lot more talent that the Cardinals
Do you think Whisenhunt shouldn't have been fired?
where else in the working world does an employer say
this person did a pretty good by external metrics, but lets fire him because we might get someone even better in
of course, you may get Mike Tice or Brad Childress walking in that door
like starting 7-1 and then missing the playoffs?
Blue knows
During Smith's nine seasons, the Bears were 17-19 in December.
The Bears have lost eight of their last nine against the Packers and six straight.
"Do you think Whisenhunt shouldn't have been fired?"
if the Cards had gone 10-6, then absolutely not
but they didn't, so I get it; I get Norv, I get Reid, I get them all but Lovie
"like starting 7-1 and then missing the playoffs?"
exactly, and with no body of work around it, like recent SB and Championship game appearances
this person did a pretty good by external metrics, but lets fire him because we might get someone even better in
So you think they fired him because they think they can get someone better?
6 years isn't really "recent". And the championship game appearance is their only playoff appearance in the last 6 years
"I bet Kod totally doesn't think Rex Ryan should be fired."
haven't paid close enough attention to Jets football over the years to weigh in; the Bears I know well being in the NFC North
"So you think they fired him because they think they can get someone better?"
I would hope, for Bears fans sake at least. I wouldn't imagine they fired him thinking they would bring someone worse in
If Bears ownership is satisfied with 7-10 wins a year and a playoff appearance once every 6 years, then yeah they shouldn't have fired Lovie.
I would hope, for Bears fans sake at least. I wouldn't imagine they fired him thinking they would bring someone worse in
ISWYDT
"6 years isn't really "recent"."
that's probably the heart of our disagreement; I consider that to be VERY recent for a SB appearance
how many NFL teams have made the SB since 2005? Maybe 5-7% of them?
I look at the Vikes
0 SB in 33 years
3 NFC Championship Games in 33 years
so a SB and a Championship game in the last 6 years is very recent....and the Vikes are one of many teams with similar droughts
how many NFL teams have made the SB since 2005? Maybe 5-7% of them?
There have been 7 super bowls since 2005. So you're saying that < 3 teams have made the super bowl since then?
bears would have made playoffs if cutlet* didn't get hurt no?
or if GB won that first game against seattle?
There have been 7 super bowls since 2005.
it was a rough estimation; several teams have played in multiple SB over that time, they don't get double counted
but I could be way off
5-7% of 32 teams is < 3 teams
"I look at the Vikes"
Here's your flaw. Comparing franchises doesn't work that way.
"5-7% of 32 teams is < 3 teams"
oof, awful estimation (ns)
7 teams have made it since the Bears, so around 20%
I wonder what kod thinks of Auburn firing their coach 2 years after winning a nat'l champyunship
"Comparing franchises doesn't work that way."
because you say it doesn't? ok
shanahan was fired, and never had a losing season in Denver
"I wonder what kod thinks of Auburn firing their coach 2 years after winning a nat'l champyunship"
like with the Jets, I dont' know Auburn football enough to weigh in, but odds are, I'd hate it
but if teams are constantly underachieving in their owner's eyes
or sometimes just need a change of leader to get a spark
companys do make changes like that in real life
oh well, we'll have to wait and see I suppose
"but if teams are constantly underachieving in their owner's eyes - or sometimes just need a change of leader to get a spark - companys do make changes like that in real life"
AKA: hit it or quit it
Can't just keep giving people 2nd, 3rd, & 4th chances just because "Well, he's trying". Get the job done or get out.
"like with the Jets, I dont' know Auburn football enough to weigh in, but odds are, I'd hate it"
C'mon, man. Everybody on planet friggin earth knows the Jets are a trainwreck.
"where else in the working world does an employer say"
I hate when people try to compare real life to sports. Not a valid comparison. No offense, Kod, just hate the argument.
"C'mon, man. Everybody on planet friggin earth knows the Jets are a trainwreck."
this year for sure
but, if I was the owner, I'd probably give him another year
he helped make the Jets one thing they had never seemed to be in my lifetime at least.....

wonder what smokin jay thinks of this
how many coaches in those years for vikes?

so an average of what, 5 years almost?
sounds fair
Lovie got 8
